Why Praying for a Parking Space Is an Act of Resistance
The prayers we skip because something tells us they're too small.
Reader Anisea spoke of her journey praying when she forgets something: “I would often pray over whatever it was I forgot, or what my husband would forget, and then wait. It happened so often that I grew to trust that if God chose to bring it to mind again, it was wonderful, but if He didn't, I trusted that I could leave it with Him. I always thought I was slightly extreme because I was praying over something so small … even felt selfish praying over it.”
I fully relate to the idea of almost feeling selfish for praying for the “small” things.
I wonder how many prayers we don't pray because the enemy says, “Oh, don't bother about that. It’s too small. God doesn’t care. Don’t be selfish!”
Which means … when we pray for something small, we're actually resisting the work of the enemy! Resist the devil, so he will flee from us (James 4:7).
Ha! YES!
When we cast all our cares on him …
Small Prayers = Active Resistance
• We’re obeying him. (1 Peter 5:7)
• We’ll get the answers and help we need. (John 14:13)
• We’re acknowledging God as our loving Father. (Matthew 7:7-11)
• We’re getting wisdom. (James 1:5)
Like Anisea, I also pray to remember passing thoughts that vanish. If God brought them to mind once, he can bring them to mind again.
I pray that God would order my days. I might not remember to put the laundry in the dryer, but God does.
I pray for wisdom on what to eat for lunch, or what to make for dinner.
I pray for the right amount of sleep, and the right wake-up time.
I pray, when I go shopping, that I would be wise in my purchases.
I have, at times, prayed for parking spaces, weather changes, and the ability to clean up my house in the twenty minutes before a guest arrives.
Let’s pray … because it’s an act of resistance and a glory to God.
Lord, teach us to pray!
