God Is Already Speaking to Us More Than We Realize

A friend once asked how I went from not praying for eight years to where I am now: "Because you seem crazy in tune with the Holy Spirit." The short version: in the summer of 2018, my college mentors asked me to cover their staff retreat in prayer—a single thirty-minute slot. The idea completely freaked me out. 

But when I finally sat down on the porch swing, within about thirty seconds I felt as if I had entered into someone else's stream of prayer. The half hour sped by. And when it was over, I thought: That was amazing! I want to do that again. That weekend gave me a hunger for prayer I had never experienced before.

In February 2020, I launched the Prayer Refresh, a 21-day email sequence of single-sentence prayers to pray as you go about your day. I believe that short prayers, offered all day, matter. 

For over 2,000 days now, I have sought to bring what I have been learning about prayer to curious readers. And I have learned a lot. Some of the surprises: each of us is already a ten in prayer: beloved, accepted, his. And we can also grow in prayer. 

We have different giftings. It's okay to not be an-hour-a-day prayer person. A one-sentence-a-few-times-an-hour person of prayer is also beautiful.

Besides regular writing about prayer, I co-founded Workplace Prayer with my business partner Bob Perry, a ministry that offers paid prayer coverage for businesses, families, and ministries. 

We launched Prayer Mentoring, a prayer training and discipleship program, which lives in different forms in different seasons. I host the Make Prayer Beautiful podcast. And we founded our publishing house, Makarios Press, named for the Greek word in the Beatitudes, usually translated "Blessed are the," but more accurately, "you are in your happy place when."

Before I turned to full-time prayer and thinking about prayer, I spent almost two decades working with my mother, the founder of the homeschooling company Sonlight Curriculum. 

I'm a homeschooling mother of five, and I live on land in central Virginia.
