Even Jesus Grew in Wisdom

Why Luke 2:52 offers such good news.

I was thinking recently about the famous scripture Luke 2:52: “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.”

And obviously a child needs to grow taller, needs to gain stature.

But the rest of the verse is so surprising!

Jesus, the God of the universe, come to earth in human form, needed to grow in wisdom?

He needed an increase in favor with man, which makes some sense, and with God, which really doesn’t make much sense.

Jesus did not start off fully wise and with full favor.

I find this to be such good news.

I had an experience some time ago when I acted with a great deal of zeal but without much wisdom.

And it didn’t turn out well! (Imagine!)

In the past, I would want to crawl into a hole for months.

But if even Jesus needed to grow in wisdom, he was not angry with me.

Looking for progress, not perfection.

And if the call is to be like Jesus, then I have space to be imperfect, to still be in process, to grow more in wisdom and favor.

I appreciate that.

Onward and upward!

Lord, Ephesians 1:17 says, “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know him better.”

May we keep pressing in for the more you have for us. Thank you, Lord! Amen!

This is what we pray for, that you may become complete,
