- Description: She asked God's forgiveness and still wasn't free. But God has the creativity and power to help us break free of any mess we find ourselves in.

I once heard an interview where a woman spoke about dealing with shame when reading the book of Proverbs. She spent some decades being the poster child for “a good Christian girl,” then had a season in her life where everything fell apart.

She said, “I knew that I had made bad decisions. I would come to the book of Proverbs and I didn't want to read it, because it was like a manuscript of all of the things that I had done wrong in my life. When I read about the foolish person, I would think, ‘Oh, yeah, I did that. I messed up in that way. This pit that I’m in? It's all my fault.’ It felt like I had made such a tangled mess of my life that I couldn’t see which part of the string to pull to start to untangle the mess.”

When she read Proverbs, she felt condemnation and shame, rather than helpful instruction for a godly life.

In the end, she said, *Lord, forgive me for the bad decisions. Let me walk with you. You be the one to untangle the mess.*

Except that wasn’t quite enough.

Because any problem she had, she blamed herself. “I *deserve* this because of my bad choices.”

She needed to go a step further and say, *Lord, thank you for your forgiveness. Now show me how to have grace for myself. Let me have the same grace for myself that you have for me.*

And in that moment, though practically nothing in her life changed, actually everything changed. She stopped punishing herself for the past. She started to look for ways to do the next right thing.

To greet wisdom as a cherished friend who has continued to call her, even if she was far off.

The book of Proverbs is a guidebook for right living that God makes freely available to his people so we can do well in life.

But if yesterday we did not follow the guidebook, then we can come to God today and say, *I regret the way that my life went. Please forgive me. Let me forgive myself. Let me walk in your way.*

He is not lacking in ideas and creativity and power to help us get out of any mess that we have made.

*Lord, please break off all shame that binds us to past mistakes, sins, foolishness, and poor decisions. Thank you that you don’t define us by those worst parts of ourselves, but instead remove sin as far as the east is from the west—infinitely far.*

*Lord, please give us the ability to walk in the same grace towards ourselves that you give to us. Lord, bless us to walk in wisdom and grace this day.*

*Thank you that your grace extends to the depths, that your love and forgiveness reach so much farther than what we extend to ourselves.*

When it comes to mercy, God is rich!
