And the Lord said, "Move to a farm.” I wasn't in the habit of hearing his voice, so I moved on with my day. My husband came home from his job as a forensic structural engineer that evening: “I was driving in the mountains, and I think the Lord said, ‘Move to a farm.’” Since we both heard the same thing on the same day, we figured we should probably do it. That fall we drove to a bunch of different states, looking at properties. When we stepped onto our land, we had no doubt that we were in the right place for us: unimproved acreage in central Virginia. Then I unexpectedly found I was expecting again, and as I did not want to give birth in a yurt, we ended up staying in Boulder another year. (We bought at the peak of the real estate market, and then sold in the trough. Ah, well. We follow the Lord even when the financial circumstances of the world around seem frustrating.) We moved at the end of July 2009\. We lived until mid-October with no electricity or running water. That's a pretty long time to be camping. When we arrived, we didn't know what ticks looked like. We didn't know about poison ivy (which our land was covered with). We spent a very itchy first week as we lived in tents, before we moved into a construction trailer. Through the beginning of 2014, I blogged almost daily, in part to reassure my family that we were still alive. Survival guide. Farming adventure. I have never wanted to revisit those stories because there were a lot of really challenging things in that season. But Paul Van Hoesen started reading it some years ago and said, "Amy! This is such a treasure of your family history!” Then Bob started reading more recently, and he said, "I get started reading, and it's better than any Netflix documentary. I get sucked in, and then realize it’s 1 a.m. and I really do need to go to bed.” So I have been working on getting the blog posts into a format that I like, figuring out how to organize the posts.
