He could create quantities of food and wine out of one person’s lunch and some barrels of water, and knew how to get a silver coin from the mouth of a fish. In my favorite story of abundance, in John 21, the disciples had gone fishing, but they caught nothing. > Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. > He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” > “No,” they answered. > He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. > Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” John recognized Jesus because of the abundance of the catch. Not, “Oh, two minnows. Must be the Lord.” No! Nets so full they had to tow them—that demonstrated that Jesus was in their midst. > When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” > So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. > Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Jesus didn’t say to them, “Thanks so much for catching all those fish. I'm pretty hungry. Why don't you make me breakfast?” No! He was already preparing breakfast for them. They simply had to bring some of the catch (that he had provided), then come and eat. And I realize that not every season of life feels like it is stuffed to bursting with abundance. In fact, the disciples themselves had just come through some pretty horrific days: the crucifixion, the confusion of the resurrection, the grief that he was no longer daily with them. But still: when John saw abundance, he knew: “It is the Lord!” *Lord, your word says in Psalm 84:11, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.” You say, Lord, that you give us favor and honor, and that you withhold no good thing.* *Thank you for being our sun and our shield, the source of our light and heat, as well as our protection. Thank you that you demonstrate the heart of God, to bless and provide.* *Lord, for any way that our souls feel a pinch right now; for any way that you do not seem to be pouring out abundance; for any way that life might feel like the fishing-all-night-with-no-catch … please soon call out the next instructions, so that our nets might be full.* *May we have a renewed sense of the plentiful, abundant God that you are.* *In Jesus’ holy name, and for the praise of his glory, amen.* The king has lavished on us the wealth of his grace, Amy Joy --- You are invited!
