# Jesus Draws Us; He Doesn’t Drive Us

My friend Jaime sent me a lovely reflection about Mary and Martha after she read [this message](https://blog.makeprayerbeautiful.com/a-new-take-on-mary-and-martha/). 

> I was just considering this story….  
> In horsemanship, the way I work now, we draw the horses in. Natural horsemanship, which is the standard today, “drives” the horse to run until it really wants to not have to run. Then it will come by the human in order to find peace—but the horse knows it was the human that drove it, and the horse doesn’t feel especially good about the rest.   
> By contrast, one of the things I love about Jesus is he “will be lifted up and draw all men.” We don’t first drive the horse to have to run. The horse does this itself.   
> We simply ask the horse to focus on us instead of its concerns, and we draw the horse in to us. We offer peace.   
> What I noticed in the story is that Jesus did not go to their home when Lazarus had died, but he stayed at a distance and invited the women to come to him. He drew them out to meet him.   
> He may not have sent a direct invitation to Martha, who came on her own, but he did send an invite to Mary, who came quickly.   
> The more I consider, the more I see the details that show me the heart.   
> Sure, sometimes he comes to get us … in our locked upper room.   
> But I think he prefers when we decide to come find him, and he promises peace and rest!  
> And then to follow him where life is full of adventure.   
> That’s the next step with the horses.   
> First draw.   
> Then follow.  
> Then we send them!  
> Beautiful!

Yes! It’s like the story of the prodigal son: the Father did not go out chasing the son around, but waited and watched for his return.

*Lord, thank you that you draw us to yourself. May we follow you well, and do what we see you doing. You are worthy of all our praise. Amen.*
